As regular visitors know I usually post a poem at the weekends. Well I have nt found anything that interested me apart from this passage from Dickens,’Christmas Carol.’
‘There are many things from which I might have derived good, by which I have not profited, I dare say,’ returned the nephew. ‘Christmas among the rest. But I am sure I have always thought of Christmas time, when it has come round … as a good time; a kind, forgiving, charitable, pleasant time; the only time I know of, in the long calendar of the year, when men and women seem by one consent to open their shut-up hearts freely, and to think of people below them as if they really were fellow-passengers to the grave, and not another race of creatures bound on other journeys. And therefore, uncle, though it has never put a scrap of gold or silver in my pocket, I believe that it has done me good, and will do me good.’
I have just been reading a collegues blog about him being told by his local pastor to ‘do’ a favour.
One wonder’s if he is short on his annual quota because halfway through his first task he took on a second one. Rather foolishly he hitches his vehicle to a second one and begins towing it. He register’s a little surprise when a motorway pile up is closely avoided. I just thank his god that here that is illegal – only trained personnel and dedicated tow trucks are allowed on our freeways. It was luck that his stupidity did nt result in death and mayhem, not the debt collector in the sky. My point is your priest even local witchdocter should nt tell you to do a favour. Favours should be a spontaneous act. I am short on doing favours. I never learn . . . Last wednesday morning an elderly next door neighbour came round and asked to use my phone – to report a fault on her landline, which she duly did. I asked her whether she had checked that the socket was ok. She had nt and as she was about to return home to check, she blew her nose on a tissue and left. 10 minutes later she rang to say that the socket was indeed adrift and once reinserted the phone was now A ok!
Yesterday I sneezed – several times. Last night I did nt sleep much as the cold took hold. This morning I feel lousy. Later tonight I had planned to walk around to my local pub to celebrate the birth of 2007. While some friends will be having a glass of wine in France, a coffee in South Africa,an antipidean new year barbie and listening to there cricket team thrashing the poms, others will be having an informal soiree with friends in asia , sunning themselves with Tony Blair on a Floridean beach. To them and to you quietly celebrating in Canada, utah, nabraska,Nth carolina,England and Scotland, remember me, I shall be nursing a stonker of a cold and maybe a glass of malt whisky
….Is it any wonder I am not ‘into’ doing anyone a favour……ever again !

Should auld acquaintance be forgot,
And never brought to mind?
Should auld acquaintance be forgot,
And auld lang syne?

For auld lang syne, my dear,
For auld lang syne,
We’ll tak a cup o’ kindness yet,
For auld lang syne.

And surely ye’ll be your pint-stowp,
And surely I’ll be mine!
And we’ll tak a cup o’ kindness yet,
For auld lang syne.

For auld lang syne, my dear,
For auld lang syne,
We’ll tak a cup o’ kindness yet,
For auld lang syne.

We twa hae run about the braes,
And pu’d the gowans fine;
But we’ve wandered mony a weary fit
Sin’ auld lang syne.

For auld lang syne, my dear,
For auld lang syne,
We’ll tak a cup o’ kindness yet,
For auld lang syne.

We twa hae paidled i’ the burn,
Frae morning sun till dine;
But seas between us braid hae roared
Sin’ auld lang syne.

For auld lang syne, my dear,
For auld lang syne,
We’ll tak a cup o’ kindness yet,
For auld lang syne.

And there’s a hand, my trusty fiere,
And gie’s a hand o’ thine!
And we’ll tak a right guid-willie waught

For auld lang syne.

For auld lang syne, my dear,
For auld lang syne,
We’ll tak a cup o’ kindness yet,
For auld lang syne.

  2. Dear Laird,I am sorry your good deed left you feeling poorly, just push the fluids (perhaps you have some left over from Christmas!?!) and you should be feeling right in no time at all.  Thank you for coming by, your Romey is lovely, about 10 months younger than my \’Lil.  And who is the dapper handsome gentleman that goes by the name of Harold?  Ha!Congratulations on the new addition!! What a way to start off the New Year.  I am wishing you and your loved ones all the best the new year has to offer.  Your friend from Nth carolina will be ringing in the new year with nonalcholic bubbly with the husband and children, and the energizer bunny that goes by the name of Dick Clark. Thinking of you safe and sound in your castle… from the Slover Dependancy (also know as the slave quarters) in New Bern, NC,Sheila

  3. Thank you for the New Year\’s Eve visit.  I do not know who we have as a common friend, but I am pleased that you stopped by and left a comment.  I will most certainly return to read more in the near future.  From what little I did read, however, I can say that we both appreciate Robert Burns, that you have written the best short version of the derivation of the holidays surrounding the Winter solstice I have seen, and that I have a penny black (not necessarily in that order.)  May you have good health, good fortune, and joy in the new year.
    Peace, Doc

  4. And a Happy New Year to You Jarl!
I woke up with a positive new outlook that even the dog noticed this morning! How come you spend so much time on your pc when you have all that  prima nocte to sort out? Ha ha only joking.
I appreciate your comment on my site re: The river Tigris, trouble is the press will always find something to latch onto to appease their paymasters and stringpullers! Well I for one shall continue to sing Mr Powell\’s praises! My youngest brother lives near Enoch\’s old constituency and has decided to move to France this year, as have other members of my family. Funny thing is he has always been a staunch\’ armchair socialist Gruniad reader\’ ha ha.
    Blessings of the new season,
    Lillith xx

  5. Hi,Harold.
I am so glad to see your year wish in Chinese,so geniality.
About doing a favour,I think it depends on  idiographic situation.Usually I  do favours for acquaintances, but seldom for the strangers( I scare they are up to no good).
Happy new year to you ^^
    Take care .

  6. Happy New Year hugs all round. Your granddaughter\’s birthday was all of three days before mine. I hope she enjoyed it and congratulations on having another grandchild. Damnit I need to stop feeling broody *laughs*. I envy you on the roasted venison front but I did remember the nips this time round, admittedly half an hour before the local greengrocer closed but anyhoo. Best wished for 2007. Ooo scarey thought, I qualify as an officer this year…EEEK!

  7. Greetings Dear U.K. correspondent. Thanks for the festive and New Year wishes.
I hope this communication finds you in good spirit and I have to say I do look forward to communicating again soon.
In the mean time …..Happy 2007…may it be the best year ever.

  8. Hello,
Thanks for coming by my space.  Yes…the other side of the story… Well, it is NOT something I was going to do because I wanted to do it…. but after having done it… It was a good experience.  Sometimes I complain because I haven\’t had many "exciting" experiences in life… so I guess this was an experience I have had now. hehe
I appreciate your help (on Ron\’s space) concerning the MSN pop ups.  I don\’t think it is on my computer because I\’m not having trouble that way.  But some people have mentioned they have trouble visiting my space.  GRRRRRR  Oh well. hopefully can get that resolved.  Anyway… hope this year is wonderful for you.   Someday…. I would so love to go see a real castle.. hehe.. Take care.  Vallerie
